Datasheet Product Launch

Overview

The Jackson Laboratory is a leader in biomedical research and mouse model development. Buying mouse models can be a complicated process for even the most seasoned scientist.

The Jackson Laboratory Mouse Search aims to connect scientists with the right model by displaying information in an accessible and clear format for all user types. I joined the product team responsible for B2B sales and helped design, test, and ship this product redesign.

The Problem

The legacy datasheet was overly complicated, hard to navigate, and it was unclear how to place an order.

To guide the redesign, we created a few design principles to keep in mind to help keep the user’s needs at the forefront.

 Pre-launch

Design

I was tasked with continuing the design of their new product pricing panels (an interactive tool to determine product pricing) for five of their products that were previously not highlighted on the legacy version of the product panel.

I started to pull together rough wireframes that I could use to facilitate conversations with the product owners at the Jackson Laboratory. The goal was to expose customers to more information than what was previously to allow customers to make informed decisions.

Internal Validation

Over a series of meetings with the product owners and stakeholders, I was able to refine and iterate on the product pricing panels. We were able to determine the key information to share on the panels to help customers understand their options.

Updates

Based on the internal conversations, I continued to iterate on the product panels. I kept our design principles in mind and kept the product panels organized, easy to navigate, and simple.

 Post-launch

User Testing

Another designer and I conducted both moderated user feedback and user analytics through Pendo.

Over the course of 2 weeks we interviewed:

  • 2 Researchers

  • 2 Managers

  • 1 Purchaser

The Pendo analytics collected data for 3 months after general availability of the feature.

Key Insights

Persona Development

After interviews were completed, another designer and I worked together to create personas. Three personas were made based on the insights we gathered from our user interviews.

Enhancements

Our product team continued to grow, so we decided to create a design system that everyone on our decentralized design team could use. I was the team representative for the datasheet and ensured that the design system would continue to meet the specific needs of this unique product. This included creating a unique grid system, in-page anchor links, buttons, and a header.

Next Steps & Lessons Learned

The next steps are to enter the design system enhancements into the developer backlog so they can work on the updates in upcoming sprints. This will help the datasheet align to other products at the Jackson Laboratory and resolve some of the responsive design problems.

During this project, I learned how to work in a collaborative environment with designers, stakeholders, and developers. We were able to communicate and continuously ideate together to create a product that users have responded really well to.
